OUR POWER, OUR PLANET

When the lawyer asked Jesus which was the greatest commandment, Jesus answered that there were only two: ‘Love God and love your neighbour as yourself.’ On asking, ’Who is my neighbour?’, maybe today Jesus would answer, ‘LOVE GOD AND LOVE ALL CREATION AS YOURSELF’.

This month as we celebrate Earth Day, we are called to be better stewards of the Earth. How can we do this. Maybe these ten climate commandments can give us the answer. Simple small actions but they can make a difference.

THE CLIMATE CHANGE COMMANDMENTS

  1. Respect the earth and its people.
  2. Promote its growth and vegetation.
  3. Respect all living things.
  4. Do not pollute the air, land or sea by corrupt means to further profit.
  5. Give space to the birds of the air, fish in the sea, animals on the planet to develop and live freely.
  6. Do not waste water, food, electricity.
  7. Do not deploy machinery for unnecessary transport.
  8. Be at one with the needs of the people around you and share with all.
  9. Live a lifestyle in keeping with your needs and the common good.
  10.  Learn to love your stewardship of all that lives.

We are the ones consuming resources and changing the face of the earth with our needs and innovations.

“At this time of ecological crisis, the crucified Christ’s solidarity with victims of extinction extends organically to all species under threat. Their demise is not due to natural causes but to wrongful human action and inaction. The vital Christian response is to go and make every effort to take the crucified species down from the cross through intensive action to protect and restore the natural world.”
